World Uillean Piping Day Celebration
November 2 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pmFree
Saturday November 2nd is World Uilleann Pipes Day. Come celebrate this day with us!
We have local musician Mike Mullins coming in for a demonstration of the uilleann pipes. Mike took up the uilleann pipes in his 40’s after first hearing them as a child living in Ireland. A recording by the great Leo Rowsome followed by a 20 year search to find a set started him on the path. The uilleann pipes are one of the iconic instruments of Irish music and, while considered to be bagpipes, they are bellows blown and bear little resemblance to the great war pipes (highland pipes). They are a parlor instrument, meaning they can be enjoyed in an indoor setting, and have a full 2 octave range. Being part of SLIA and bringing along a new generation of pipers is a great treat for Mike.
Mike is also a member of the board at St. Louis Irish Arts. In addition to that, he is instrumental in bringing Tionól to St. Louis every year.
This is a free event, which we will be hosting in our music parlor from 2pm until 4pm. (Note time subject to change, but it will be in the afternoon.)
