Description

The shakuhachi is a traditional Japanese end-blown vertical bamboo flute known for its deep, meditative sound and wide expressive range. Features four finger holes on the front and one thumb hole on the back (totaling five holes), with a diagonally cut blowing edge called the utaguchi. : Played solo for traditional honkyoku meditation pieces or alongside other instruments in chamber ensembles like sankyoku (with the koto and shamisen). Unlike a recorder, it lacks a fipple or internal duct; the player blows across the open utaguchi edge, shaping the airstream with lips and head tilt. Using half-holing, partial hole shading (meri and kari techniques), and subtle head movements, players can bend notes and produce a full chromatic scale across two to three octaves. This instrument is in very good condition.
